Dear South-Western Families,
At 4:52 this evening we received the following communication from Franklin County Public Health:
“In response to the Ohio Public Advisory System designating Franklin County Level 4 or “purple,” Franklin County Public Health is issuing the following clarifying guidance to all public and private K-12 schools.
The health department has issued a Stay at Home advisory for all residents effective November 20-December 18. This guidance acknowledges the need for only essential activities including work and school. In that advisory, schools are recommended to maintain their current modality of learning to the extent possible and discontinue extracurricular activities. Public health is concerned about possible transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and more cases of COVID-19 as a result of potential spread during the Thanksgiving break. In order to minimize that potential, schools are encouraged to transition to remote learning after the Thanksgiving Holiday and remain in virtual learning for the duration of the advisory period.”
We have reviewed the available data, listened to Governor DeWine, and talked with our local health departments. It is becoming increasingly more difficult to staff our operations with the growing number of COVID-19 cases in Franklin County and the number of individuals who need to quarantine due to close contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus. Our health officials continue to stress and our experiences prove that school is a safe place for students and staff with layered protocols in place. Unfortunately, community conditions do have an impact on our ability to staff and operate our schools.
We are hopeful that by following the recommendations of our public health officials and transitioning to a fully remote learning environment after Thanksgiving break and remaining in that model through winter break, more favorable conditions and staffing levels will result as we start the new calendar year. In following the health department recommendations:
The last in-person day for blue students will be November 23, 2020; and
The last in-person day for green students will be November 20, 2020.
You will be receiving additional information from your child’s teacher and school. This will include meal pick-up instructions during remote learning.
Being physically present in school is important to the social, emotional, and educational growth of our students, but we also need to keep the safety of our students and staff at the center of our decision-making process. According to many of the reports we have seen, spread of the virus continues to take place in settings primarily outside of our schools and we know this has the potential to make community conditions less than favorable, which in turn means our ability to adequately staff our classrooms is less likely. We are hopeful that by making this decision now families and staff will have a better opportunity to plan for the transition.
We will continue to review our local data and talk with our health agencies to assist us in our future planning. We will be communicating again on December 17 to update you on conditions and plans for the new calendar year. Thank you for your support during these challenging times.

West Franklin Elementary School Parents,
Welcome to the 20-21 School year in South-Western City Schools District. We are looking forward to working with both you and our students in many formats this year. We are working hard to effectively communicate with you, the community and our students. Please know that as we begin this year with virtual instruction, we look forward to seeing you in the near future.

Tech tips for parents and students
How to wear a mask:
Meal pick up will be done at each home school for students during Remote Learning. Parents should order lunches for students two weeks in advance on the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. These lunches can be picked up at our school on Monday and Wednesday from 12-1 or 4-6 pm. Lunches must be pre-ordered and prepaid.
On August 24-26, we will be distributing supplies that each student will need. Please make every effort to pick up these supplies for the students’ online instruction. Each student will receive a chrome book (if they don’t have one), and art and classroom supplies.
Materials pick up hours are 8-10, 10:30-12:30, 1-3 each day. We will use the playground side of the building for drive up pick up.
Our first day of instruction will be Thursday August 27th. Links to each classroom will be sent. Again, please make sure that your Infinite Campus Parent Portal information is updated.
Our Meet the Teacher will be August 25, from 3:30-5:30 for grades 1-4, and will be virtual this year. Each teacher will be available virtually for an interactive session with the students and parents. Links will be provided in an email closer to that date. You may attend multiple sessions.
As always, don’t hesitate to contact the school at 614-801-8400 with any questions you may have. Office staff is available daily from 7:30-3:00, and are checking for phone messages regularly.

Cómo usar una máscara:
La comida se recogerá en cada escuela a la que pertenece el estudiantes durante el aprendizaje remoto. There will be no school this Friday, September 4. There will not be any google meets and no new assignments will be given. Students can still submit assignments and view recorded items on Friday from previous days.
There is no school on Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day.
We will transition to a blended learning format Tuesday, September 8. You should have received a letter letting you know if your child will follow the blue or green schedule, and their transportation information. Students on the blue schedule will come to school on Mondays and Tuesdays, and students on the green schedules will come to school on Thursdays and Fridays. Wednesdays will be a day for remote learning. Given school being closed on Monday, September 7, students on the blue schedule will come Tuesday, September 8 and Wednesday, September 9. Students on the green schedule will come Thursday, September 10 and Friday, September 11. See our building or district website for the calendar for the entire school year.
During students three days of remote learning each week, students should be logging in to google classroom, joining google meets, and submitting assignments each school day. Teachers are taking attendance, and monitoring who attends live sessions with teachers and who submits assignments.
If your child is going to be a car rider, please call the school office and let us know. If we do not hear from you and your child has access to a school bus, we will put them on the school bus at the end of their first day.
Remember, children are required to wear a mask that covers their nose, mouth and chin on the school bus and while at school. Please have them practice wearing one before their first day, to find one that is comfortable, and isn’t too big or too small.
As you prepare for our blended learning format, know your child will need to bring their chromebook and charger with them each day they are at school, and will bring them home for remote learning. Students can return library materials from last school year when we return, and will have access to new materials as well.
